New Zealand’s top choice biscuit

posted in: Food and drink 0

New Zealand’s favourite biscuit is the Mallowpuff Original, a nationwide poll has decided.

Almost 5,000 voters – of which 94% were women – cast their votes for the country’s favourite biscuit in the national Bikkielections.

It was the fourth time the poll had been held, promoted by manufacturer Griffins, and 58 biscuits were included in the election.

For the first time since the Bikkielections began, every region was united, choosing the Mallowpuff as top biscuit, except for the Tasman electorate where Cookie Bear Hundreds and Thousands came out on top.

Weeks of campaigning via billboards, radio and street sampling preceded the poll before votes were collated via an online app.

Regional differences set apart the also-rans but those to feature in the top rankings included Hokey Pokey Squiggles, Macaroons and Toffee Pops Original.

The 10 best sports grounds in New Zealand

posted in: Random, Things to do 0

New Zealand has a wide variety of sports stadia to cater for all major sports, many of them helping to create wonderful crowd atmosphere.

Sports writers from the NZ Herald and Radio Sport put their heads together to compile a collective list of their favourite sports grounds.

Here’s their top 10.

10 best sports grounds in New Zealand

1. Basin Reserve, Wellington

Home of Wellington cricket and host for international cricket.

2. Eden Park, Auckland

Home of rugby’s Blues, Auckland Rugby and venue for international rugby, cricket and, occasionally, football.

3= Western Springs, Auckland

Home of Auckland speedway (and venue for major rock concerts).

3=  Pukekura Park, New Plymouth

Cricket ground inside a 52-hectare “Garden of National Significance”. Hosts cultural events including WOMAD Festival.

5= Hagley Oval, Christchurch

Home of Canterbury cricket, redeveloped for Cricket World Cup.

6= Forsyth Barr Stadium, Dunedin

Home of Highlanders and Otago Rugby, and international rugby venue. Has retractable roof, and hosts other sports including football.

7= Kiwitea Street, Auckland

Home of football’s Auckland City and Central United, and resembles lower-league football grounds from England’s past.

7= Queenstown Events Centre

Test and ODI cricket venue, former home of national sevens tournament.

9= Seddon Park, Hamilton

Test and ODI cricket venue, and home of Northern Districts Cricket.

10. Carlaw Park, Auckland

No longer exists – the former home of rugby league is now the site of a hotel, apartments and office buildings.

“(Pukekura Park is the) best cricket ground in the world. Bit small these days, but could be easily enlarged.“ — NZ Herald sports writer Dylan Cleaver.

5 top stops between Auckland & the Bay of Islands

posted in: Places 0

It’s not practical (or fun) to make the drive between Auckland and the Bay of Islands in one session.

The drive takes between three and four hours, depending on how much of a hurry you’re in. But in their haste, many travellers miss some excellent places to stop.

Top choices

Here are five suggested diversions from travel writer Kit Packer:

Stop 1: Ignore the toll road on State Highway 1 and take the scenic route along the coast. It’s only an extra 20 minutes of driving (and if you stop to pay the toll at a coin-operated booth you could waste half of that in a queue!), and there’s plenty to see.

Turn off at Silverdale and you’ll come into Orewa, a pleasant township favoured by retired Aucklanders. It has a magnificent beach and a strip of cafes. Or call into the local surf club on the beach (they welcome visitors) for a drink.

Stop 2: Continuing the coastal route, turn off at Waiwera if you fancy a dip at the local pools and spa. You won’t find a public pool in more scenic surroundings, and there’s a pleasant beach at the end of the road.

Stop 3: Visit New Zealand’s first marine reserve at Goat Island. Turn off SH1 at Warkworth and follow the signs, and you’ll find the reserve at the end of Goat Island Rd, five minutes past the town centre of Leigh.

If you want to get into the water, you’ll see an amazing range of sea life; but if you just want to wander, you’ll still find plenty to see (some fish are so people friendly, they’ll take food from your hands).

Stop 4: It’s tempting to save time by driving around Whangarei (a city of 50,000+ population), but if you fancy lunch or a stretch of the legs, follow the signs to the Quay area.

There you’ll find an interesting collection of tourist shops and cafes, and the local information centre which has everything you need to know about what’s happening in the city and surrounding area.

Whangarei is often omitted from the “must see” itineraries in tourism guides but the city can surprise – and it’s an excellent base for those who want to explore the hundreds of nearby beaches and islands.

Stop 5: The entrance to the Bay of Islands is a small town called Kawakawa. It’s worth pulling over for a toilet stop – whether your bladder needs it or not.

The town boasts the most photographed toilets in New Zealand.

Designed by famed Austrian architect Frederick Hundertwasser, the toilets are a piece of art and it may be a while before you get another chance to buy a postcard celebrating the existence of a public loo.
