A bacon and egg pie with golden pastry and mouth-watering flavour has been judged the best pie in New Zealand.
It was awarded the title of Supreme Award winner at the 20th annual Bakels New Zealand Supreme Pie Awards.
The champion pie is baked daily by Tauranga baker Patrick Lam at his Patrick’s Pie Group Gold Star Bakery. Lam has taken the top national pie-making title five times since 2003 and has collected more than 60 awards for his range of pies which include savoury and sweet styles.
A panel of more than 20 judges spent 10 hours judging more than 5,000 entries from more than 500 bakers, as the awards were decided in a range of pie categories. The winners in each category were awarded Gold Medals and became finalists for the Supreme Award.
Runners-up in each category were awarded Silver Medals, followed by bronze and highly-commended awards.
